Robert Kaplan, PhD

Certified Forensic Examiner, Lake Oswego

Research shows that adverse childhood experiences, such as neglect and abuse, causes changes in the developing brain's functioning and structure that lead to poor judgment and impulse control. Dr. Kaplan will present the research underlying these neurophysiological, neuro-anatomical changes and show how they apply to the issues of culpability and competence to stand trial in criminal cases. He will also discuss newer treatment options that are currently available to treat victims of trauma so that they will be less dangerous in the future.
