Presenter:
Dr. Daniel Reisberg, Patricia & Clifford Lunneborg Professor of Psychology, Emeritus, Reed College, Portland

In this webinar, Dr. Reisberg will discuss (and respond to) the arguments routinely offered by prosecutors when they seek to exclude memory experts. He will also describe the sorts of cases for which a memory expert might be useful, and consider some of the issues the expert might discuss for each of these types. He’ll discuss cases hinging on an ID; cases that involve a child’s report on events; cases (including confession cases) that rely on a suspect’s memory; and also cases in which the complainant has some sort of memory “gap.” He’ll also tackle some of the pragmatic issues of dealing with a memory expert, including some “do’s and don’t's” for attorneys.

Dr. Reisberg is the Patricia & Clifford Lunneborg Professor of Psychology, Emeritus, from Reed College. His decades of research and scholarship have examined the accuracy and completeness of human memory. Reisberg has testified in civil, criminal, and family courts. He is the author of many books, including one aimed directly at forensic issues: The Science of Perception and Memory: A pragmatic guide for the justice system (2014, Oxford University Press). Although retired from teaching, Reisberg continues to do research and consult; his recent work includes a regular column appearing in The NACDL Champion
