9:00 Using Stage and Screen Techniques to Create Dynamic Narratives in the Courtroom
Keith Belzer, La Crosse, WI
Many trial lawyers have incorporated the use of storytelling in their trial presentations.  Former actor, playwright and current jury trial consultant, Keith Belzer, will review the basics of using story in the courtroom, and why it works.  He will then talk about some creative ideas that can be utilized to create dynamic heart zone presentations in front of our audiences of 12.

10:30 Break

10:45 Review & Revise, Not Repeat: Gideon at 61 Challenges Racism in the Criminal Legal System
Jeffery Robinson, The Who We Are Project, Seattle, WA
This presentation will focus on what Gideon requires of us going forward into 2025 when it comes to fighting racism in the criminal legal system, and how the use of history (local, state, and national) can be a useful aid in building a factual basis for the challenges we make and the things we request  in our fight.

12:15 Lunch (included with registration)

1:30  Suspecting with Data: Using Our Technological Trails Against Us
Dr. Mary Fan, University of Washington, Seattle, WA
Our pooled consumer big data, such as the pictures we post or the location history and keyword search trails we leave, are generating new ways to identify criminal suspects. This talk is about evidentiary guardrails for big data searches to reduce the harms of erroneous arrests, redress secrecy, and counteract the mystique of machine infallibility.

2:30 Break

2:45  Strategies and Benefits of Working with Victims
Rene Denfeld, Mitigation Specialist and Fact Investigator, Author and Public Speaker, Metropolitan Public Defenders Office, Portland
Laura Fine, OCDLA President, Veneta OR

We will discuss why and how to talk with victims and complainants to strengthen your defense. It will include a discussion about civil compromise and creative resolution strategies.
