Online registration is now closed. You may sign up at the door at the event.

This is an outdoor event held in memory of Ardent Advocate Nancy Bergeson and celebrating defense lawyers. Nancy Bergeson was a career-long public defender whose legal acumen was matched only by her uncanny ability to empathize with her clients. She articulated her client's position to a jury or judge as if it was Nancy, herself, on trial for her life. In honor of her example, we have established the Nancy Bergeson Ardent Advocacy Series.

Agenda

Guest Lecturer

Lisa Hay is the Federal Public Defender for the District of Oregon. She has been with the office since 1998, first as a research and writing attorney, then as an assistant federal public defender, and then, in October 2014, she became the Federal Public Defender. She was appointed for a second term in 2019.  She is retiring when her term ends in June of this year.  As an assistant defender, Lisa argued in the Oregon Supreme Court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and she appeared frequently in the federal district court. Among her important litigation victories in the Ninth Circuit are U.S. v. Washington, which pushed the boundaries of Fourth Amendment protections in racially charged police-citizen encounters, and U.S. v. Saechao, which applied Miranda warning requirements in a probation context. Lisa has spoken nationally and at state conferences on the Fourth Amendment, electronic surveillance, the Ferguson Grand Jury, and other criminal law issues. She co-chairs the Committee on Bias in the Justice System in Oregon, and she serves on the National Advisory Committee on Criminal Rules after being appointed in 2020 by U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts.
