Dear Members,

We, like you, share the heartbreak of the wildfires that devastated Lahaina. We know initially people were told to stay away. That message has now changed; in the spirit of aloha we are invited to come to Maui as respectful guests to visit and provide hope for the local economy. We want to provide you an opportunity to help Maui through your presence at the Sunny Climate Conference — whether that is spending money at local businesses or volunteering to assist at a local nonprofit — or something else.

In a zoom meeting last week with the Hyatt Regency in Maui (about our Sunny Climate Conference scheduled for November 9–13, with the CLE scheduled on November 11) the hotel asked us to come.

The Hyatt Regency Resort is physically untouched; it did not sustain any damage from the fire in Lahaina. The water for the resort comes from a reservoir separate from Lahaina. The resort is currently hosting members of the community, FEMA personnel and others involved in the aftermath of the terrible fire. The Hyatt is scheduled to reopen to transient guests on September 17, 2023 and to groups and events on October 15, 2023; there are several groups scheduled for events at the Hyatt ahead of us.

We understand approximately 46 employees of the resort lost their homes. Two lost their lives. Our contact impressed upon us that people who lost their homes need their jobs; coming will help the Maui economy which is so dependent on tourism. She told us there is an effort underway to move small shops that had been in Lahaina to Kanapali — at least temporarily — so family businesses can open and hopefully, survive.

OCDLA plans to go forward with the Sunny Climate Conference in Maui this November. We hope you will join us. We will be providing you with updated information and developments about what is open (e.g. restaurants, businesses), about volunteer opportunities and about items you can take with you to donate in Maui. We will also provide you updates about how to travel to Maui this year as a tourist “with intention”.
